Vox: A Pneumatically Driven Ventilator Designed for the Covid-19 Healthcare Context

Modularity, Efficiency, and Innovation

The Vox ventilator, designed by Harriet Tzou, is a rapidly deployable, pneumatically-driven ventilator that prioritizes modularity, uses off-the-shelf solutions, and is optimized for the Covid-19 healthcare context. With its unique features and affordable production cost, Vox is set to make a significant impact in the fight against the pandemic.

As the world faced a shortage of ventilators during the Covid-19 pandemic, the CoVent-19 Challenge was launched to bridge the gap between available resources and the increasing demand. Out of over 200 submissions, Vox was selected as one of the two winning designs to continue efforts in manufacturing and validation testing.

What sets Vox apart is its modularity and cost-effectiveness. With a production cost of less than $1,000 and an assembly time of under 4 hours, Vox offers a solution that is both efficient and accessible. The design utilizes the ubiquitous IV pole for mounting, allowing for easy transport, height adjustability, and efficient storage. This innovative approach not only simplifies the assembly process but also ensures user comfort and convenience.

One of the standout features of Vox is its built-in dashboard functionality, which enables remote monitoring and operability. With a single desktop computer or tablet, up to 4 ventilators can be monitored and controlled, reducing personal exposure to disease and contamination. This feature is particularly valuable in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, where minimizing contact is crucial.

Vox's design was the result of extensive research and collaboration with healthcare professionals. By closely working with ICU nurses, respiratory therapists, and doctors, the design team was able to gather valuable insights and feedback to create a user-friendly and high-precision form factor.
